Latest Leaders – March 12-27

Ben’s Biz enjoyed some major publicity this week to claim the No. 2 overall spot (behind MetsBlog), thanks to his burger scoop that was picked up by blogs and websites across the country. Keith Olbermann debuted at No. 22, right behind yours truly. Meanwhile, author Jane Heller’s Confessions of a She-Fan continued its run atop the Fan Blogs. Latest Leaders – March 3-11

Latest Leaders in the MLBlogs Network by page view, for the period from March 3-11.

The Latest Leaders will look a little different this week, as I split them into four categories. Reasons for this include the fast proliferation of player MLBlogs (30 prospect blogs are gradually being rolled out, plus Torii Hunter of the Angels and Reed Johnson of the Cubs are about to start), the incorporation of SNY Network and YES Network blogs into the MLBlogs Network, and the fact all 30 MLB.com beat writers now have MLBlogs. Hope you enjoy the list and thanks for the great MLBlogging!

MLB PRO BLOGS

Matthew Leach was the first MLB.com writer ever to start an MLBlog, with his intro post nearly four years ago. “So here goes…” he concluded back then, and at this point Obviously You’re Not a Golfer is the most-viewed in the MLBlogs Network of megathousands. Your friendly neighborhood blog-watcher here was an aberration at No. 6 because I used this space for a morning-to-night liveblog of last week’s first full day of live baseball games — and benefitted humbly from the top headline on MLB.com. Daniel Moskos remains the top player blogger (look for Yankee farmhand Bradley Suttle to rise based on early startup returns), and Cub fans are enjoying the latest Vine Line fare from Arizona.

FAN BLOGS

It’s been a great Spring Training so far for Erin and her beloved Twins, as Plunking Gomez just shot up from 26 to 10. Watch out for YANKEEOLOGY, which has come out of nowhere to snag the No. 11 spot among fan templates. Our followers at the Official MLBlogs Twitter (@mlblogs) know Rosh well, and save for the occasional snowdrift he’s on a roll. Jane retains the top spot in this category and make sure you check out her book-signing post!

MLB PRO BLOGS

The big change in this category was the launch of all 30 MLB.com beat writer blogs for the start of Spring Training. Mark Bowman, who covers the Braves for us at MLB.com, had twice as many page views as any other MLBlog. Todd Zolecki is not exactly a blog newbie, bringing over many of his existing readers to ZoZone after recently taking over our Phillies beat. You also are going to see lots of player blogs showing up, and in only a few days of blogging, Daniel Moskos quickly debuted at No. 29 as the top overall player MLBlog the past week.

Just changed the profile pic here to reflect MLBloggers like this one in Mexico and this one in the UK and this one in Utah and this one in Canada — examples of how people are blogging about baseball all over the world.

MLB PRO BLOGS

You will start to see a lot of change in this category as we have just rolled out 30 MLB.com beat writer MLBlogs over the past several days. Some of them are just getting up and running, and already we see Todd Zolecki’s Zo Zone (Phillies) jump to No. 11, with Mark Bowman (Braves) and Mark Sheldon (Reds) posting a quick 18 and 20, respectively. We’re enjoying the new Reds Internal Affairs by a Reds intern, who debuts at 38. Hot Stove was running 80 percent of all MLBlogs traffic during the offseason and was down to 37 percent in this latest ranking period, but that still dwarfs any MLBlog so it might be on top for a while. We don’t want to just shelve that blog; what do you suggest we do with it to keep it relevant, since the beat writers will stop posting to that now and maintain their own MLBlogs in-season?

FAN BLOGS

Jane Heller became the first fan blogger to crack the overall top 10 in the MLBlogs Network (9 overall, 1 in Fans), riding the high of her popular new book “Confessions of a She-Fan” — and Ben Platt’s book review that appeared on MLB.com, yankees.com and YESNetwork.com. FutureAngels went from a regular top-10 to completely off the list and then right back to No. 7, as players reported to camp. A Tigers fan has come out of nowhere to take the 9 spot with “the daily rant.” Look at Thomas coming in strong at 10 with his Baseball Cleats & Shoes money-maker MLBlog — and he also locked down 37 with Baseball Bats. There’s a recession-busting blogger! Elizabeth vaulted from 17th to 11th, and Jen of Phillies Phollowers from 24th to 13th. King of Cali zooms from 46 to 18, and Tom from Rocky Mountain Way jumps in at 19. Welcome to our friend Bern at 47 with This Fan’s Life — and best wishes on the job search (help her if you can). Baby Paul is bringing up the rear while being reared as a Rockies fan.

What do many of the leaders have in common? They comment on other MLBlogs and always leave their full URL, growing the community while bringing people back to their great blogs. Also be sure to join us on our Official MLBlogs Twitter — and just follow us @mlblogs if you already are on Twitter. Post a tweet there whenever you blog and then use is.gd to shrink your URL for an easy plug for your post.

Speaking of Twitter, one of our MLBlogs members there is our longtime friend MC Hammer (1970s Oakland A’s batboy), who tweeted to say he is headed to Spring Training in AZ for some batting practice. Hammer says he is eager to rekindle his MLBlog so look for that to spring back to life soon and maybe even put a past chart-buster into the Latest Leaders.

In that collage above, who can list all 12 MLBlogs? Be the first person to correctly identify all of them in a comment here (feel free to include their URLs but you don’t have to) and I’ll send you an authentic MLB cap of your favorite team.

Also have to show you something very cool that I saw on the Hall of Fame Club level at Citizens Bank Park before Game 1 of the NLCS. This is in a big display case there (the broken black bat is the one Brett Myers used during his 9-pitch at-bat that rocked CC Sabathia):

I mentioned to Larry Shenk that I saw this, and how glad I was for the extra MLBlogs visibility. Then he just smiled, noting that he was responsible for it being there. Do you need any more reasons to be a regular on Phillies Insider in the comment crowd? That should tell you how influential that MLBlogger is to Philly (and all) baseball. Stop by and say hi to The Baron.
